Our dear friend Russell lost his fight with melonoma cancer on Friday 25th September. When it was diagnosed in July, after seven years in remission, the cancer was very aggressive and no treatment was available. He faced his illness with unbelievable courage and dignity.
Russell was one of the very first Chuggers, driving over from Sutton most Mondays in the early days, when we would chug from Mike's house. He attended the first Chuggers Christmas do at the Barnt Green Inn when we all fitted around one of the high tables - imagine that now!! He entered and successfully completed several sprint triathlons, but became a professional spectator, often going to support Nick in Ironman events both here and abroad. These events also afforded him the chance to indulge his passion of fine food and wine (and plenty of it!)
He had been a very keen sportsman, particularly football and cricket in his childhood, but later turned to running and cycling - he loved his bike but was always a slightly reluctant runner!! He was a great lover of the countryside, and was a keen walker and hiker, as well as a pretty smokey skier! He was a keen Baggies fan, and last year, we bought season tickets and enjoyed watching them playing in the Premiership.
Although he did not live in Barnt Green, he spent a lot of time here, and had very many friends. We will miss him terribly.
If people wish to make donations they can do so at www.dedicatetrees.com and search funds for Russell Neale. Our collective donations will allow us to dedicate an acre of English woodland in Russell’s memory. The acre will be protected in perpetuity. Hopefully we will raise enough money to place a bench with an inscription dedicated to Russell.
